Fire and smoke work in Bay, Arkansas

Bay sits at 226 feet in the St. Francis Lowlands, on about the flattest ground in Craighead County, and the whole town fits inside roughly three square miles. That compactness matters after a fire. The municipal station at 220 Elder Street is close to most addresses in town, so what usually needs restoring is finish work and smoke, not the frame.

Dial the county number and you will be talking to a crew, not to us, within a short while.

Fire only, in this county. A supply line, a water heater or a sewer backup will not route from this page.

Three square miles of Delta bottom

Bay counted 1,876 residents in 2020 and covers about 3.1 square miles. Its elevation of 226 feet puts it in the St. Francis Lowlands ecoregion rather than up on Crowley's Ridge, where Jonesboro sits at roughly 330 feet. The town belongs to the Jonesboro Metropolitan Statistical Area but is fourteen miles southeast of the city by AR-1 and local roads, and thirteen miles south of Lake City. Two Native American mounds from the Lawhorn Phase, roughly AD 1200 to 1400, still stand in the area.

None of that changes how a house burns. It changes how long a truck takes to get to it, and it changes what the road looks like in wet weather on the way in.

  2. A local crew calls backAn independent restoration contractor already working that county rings you directly and sets a time.

April 27, 2011, and the lines overhead

The Super Outbreak of April 27, 2011 put a low-end EF2 tornado through Bay with winds around 115 mph. It stayed on the ground about seven-tenths of a mile. A non-tornadic gust of 113 mph was clocked near town the same day, which is the sort of straight-line wind that pulls limbs into service drops with no funnel involved at all.

Every 72411 address sits outside Jonesboro's municipal utility footprint. Power out here comes from Craighead Electric Cooperative, founded in 1937 and energized in November 1938, which now maintains more than 4,800 miles of distribution line and 18 substations across seven counties. Rural line miles on that scale are the reason a wind event in this part of the county keeps producing fire calls for days after the storm has passed, not only during it.

What makes this place different

  • Bay is part of the Jonesboro Metropolitan Statistical Area, lies within the St. Francis Lowlands ecoregion of the Delta, and covers about 3.1 square miles at 226 feet elevation.
  • On April 27, 2011, a low-end EF2 tornado (about 115 mph) struck Bay as part of the historic 2011 Super Outbreak, and a non-tornadic wind gust of 113 mph was also clocked near Bay that day.
  • Bay Fire Department, a municipal department, is headquartered at 220 Elder Street.
  • The area around Bay contains two remaining Native American mounds from the Lawhorn Phase society (roughly AD 1200-1400).

The department at 220 Elder Street

Bay Fire Department is one of five municipal or paid departments the county Office of Emergency Management lists, alongside Jonesboro, Caraway, Lake City and Monette. Everything else in Craighead County is covered by volunteer departments and rural protection districts. We could not find a published ISO rating for the Bay department, so this page does not claim one. Only Jonesboro's Class 1 rating, effective December 18, 2015, is documented anywhere we could open.

A quick knockdown is good news for the structure and complicated news for everything inside it. Fire stopped early still drives smoke up through the attic, into closets and along the top plates of interior walls. That residue is what the restoration side of the job is about once the department clears the scene.

Fire only, and better said now than later

Craighead County is bought on this site for fire damage alone. There is no water-damage line of coverage in this county. A failed supply line, a sewer backup or rain coming through a roof at a Bay address is not something this line routes anywhere, and there is no point pretending otherwise on a page you found while your floor was wet.

What the house looks like once the smoke settles

Craighead County held an estimated 51,728 housing units as of July 2025, 60.1 percent of them owner-occupied, with a median owner-occupied value of $210,400. Bay's share of that is modest single-family stock, most of it well short of the county median in size.

The order of work on a house here rarely varies much. Secure the opening so weather and animals stay out. Document what burned before anything moves. Separate what will clean from what will not, which is usually a harder conversation about contents than about the building. Then get the residue out of wall and attic cavities before any new finish goes on top of it. Questions about how smoke affects the people who live in the house belong to a doctor, not to a restoration contractor.

Questions and answers

How far is Bay from Jonesboro?

Fourteen miles northwest by AR-1 and local roads. Lake City is thirteen miles north. Those distances matter mostly for scheduling, since the contractor who returns the call works the area rather than keeping a shop inside Bay.

Does this line handle water damage in Bay?

No. Craighead County is covered here for fire damage only. If the problem is a pipe, a sewer line or a roof leak, this is the wrong number, and it is better to learn that now than after a dispatcher takes your address.

The fire was out in a couple of minutes. Is there anything left to restore?

Sometimes less than people fear. A fire that stayed inside a pan may need nothing but cleaning and open windows. One that reached cabinets, a range hood or the attic leaves residue in places you cannot see from the kitchen doorway, and that is where a walkthrough earns its keep.

What happened in Bay in April 2011?

A low-end EF2 tornado with winds near 115 mph crossed the town on April 27, 2011 during the Super Outbreak, on a path of about seven-tenths of a mile. A separate 113 mph straight-line gust was recorded near Bay the same day.
