Fire damage work in the eastern district
Two towns hold county seat status in Craighead County, and that is the only arrangement of its kind in Arkansas. The legislature created the eastern district in 1883 so people on this side would not have to cross the county to Jonesboro to record a deed. Lake City has been the seat of it since.
The dispatcher will ask whether it is still coming in or already stopped. That changes who goes out first.
There is no water-damage coverage anywhere in this county. Fire, smoke and soot are what this page can help with.
Old Town, then Lake City
Settlement here began in the late 1830s under the name Old Town. The place was renamed Lake City in 1886 for a sedentary body of water on the river nearby, seven miles long and a mile wide, and it incorporated on February 27, 1898. The 2020 population was 2,326.
The Jonesboro, Lake City and Eastern Railroad arrived in 1897 and set off the logging and timber development that built the first town. A wooden bridge more than a mile long crossed the St. Francis River here starting in 1898, later replaced by concrete structures. The Eastern District Courthouse and that river crossing are still the two landmarks that orient the place.
- You callOne number per county. The dispatcher takes the address, the ZIP and a short description of what happened.
- A local crew calls backAn independent restoration contractor already working that county rings you directly and sets a time.
- They look, then scope itNothing is priced from a phone call. The crew walks the building, takes readings, and writes a scope you can hand to your adjuster.

A river town on the fire side of the ledger
The St. Francis runs through Craighead County and its floodway occupies the county's southeastern section, part of a control system built because the Mississippi and St. Francis repeatedly backed water over lowland farmland. Anyone who lives here already knows more about that river than a website can tell them.
It has to be said anyway, because of how coverage works: this site's coverage in Craighead County stops at fire. There is no water-damage line here at all. That is a limitation of what was bought, not a comment on what the river does, and a reader deserves to know it on the page rather than at the end of a phone call.
What is specific to here
- Lake City is Craighead County's second, eastern-district county seat, a status created by the state legislature in 1883 so eastern-county residents would not have to travel to Jonesboro for official business -- described as the only arrangement of its kind in Arkansas.
- The Jonesboro, Lake City and Eastern Railroad reached the town in 1897, spurring logging and timber-based development; a wooden bridge over a mile long crossed the nearby St. Francis River starting in 1898 and was later replaced by concrete structures.
- A tornado outbreak on April 2, 2025 damaged several homes and other structures in Lake City.
- Lake City Fire Department, a municipal department, is headquartered at 1300 Fourth Street.
The road hub of the eastern half
AR-18 comes in from Jonesboro seventeen miles west, meets AR-158 running west and AR-135 running north, and AR-135 splits south from AR-18 here toward Caraway. Monette is ten miles by AR-18 east and then AR-135 and AR-139 north; Bay is thirteen miles south on the AR-1 and AR-18 corridor.
That geometry makes Lake City the point most crews pass through on the way to anywhere else in the eastern district, which is worth knowing when you are trying to work out how someone will actually reach your address.
April 2, 2025
The tornado outbreak of April 2, 2025 damaged several homes and other structures in Lake City, and in Monette on the same day. Wind losses and fire losses are different work, but a storm leaves a town in exactly the state that produces fire calls: buildings with the envelope open, poles and lines down, and power being restored circuit by circuit across a rural cooperative system.
Craighead Electric Cooperative covers this part of the county, more than 4,800 miles of distribution line and 18 substations across seven counties. Miles of rural line on that scale are why the fire risk from a storm outlasts the storm by days.
The department at 1300 Fourth Street, and the work after it leaves
Lake City Fire Department is municipal, one of five in the county, and operates from 1300 Fourth Street. It answers in 72437, the ZIP that also carries the Eastern District Courthouse and the St. Francis River crossing. No published ISO rating for it turned up on any source we could open, and this page does not invent one.
Once the department clears, the restoration sequence begins: close the building, document everything before it moves, sort what will clean from what will not, pull residue out of wall cavities and mechanical runs, and only then rebuild. Lake City's stock runs from railroad-era buildings near the old core through recent construction, so which of those steps costs the most time changes house by house rather than following a rule.

Questions people actually ask
Why does Craighead County have two county seats?
The legislature created an eastern district in 1883, seated at Lake City, so residents of the eastern half would not have to travel to Jonesboro for official business. It is described as the only arrangement of its kind in Arkansas.
Is water damage covered in Lake City?
No. Craighead County is bought here for fire damage only. Given that the St. Francis Floodway sits in this county, that limit is worth stating clearly rather than leaving to a footnote.
How far is Lake City from the other towns nearby?
Jonesboro is seventeen miles west on AR-18, Monette ten miles northeast, Bay thirteen miles south, and Caraway is reached by AR-135 running south from the AR-18 junction here.
What damage did the April 2025 outbreak do here?
The April 2, 2025 tornado outbreak damaged several homes and other structures in Lake City and also in Monette. Those are the terms the record uses; no building-by-building count was published that we could verify.
