Getting the smell out, not covering it up

Odor is a physical thing. It comes off residue that is still sitting on a surface or still soaked into a porous one, and no amount of scent will end it while the source is in the building. Everything useful in smoke odor work follows from that one fact, and most of the shortcuts fail for the same reason.

There is no form to fill in. The number routes by county and the crew calls you back directly.

Find the residue before treating the smell

The order is source removal, cleaning, then treatment of what is left. Charred material and saturated insulation leave the building. Every surface that residue reached is cleaned with a method matched to what burned: dry methods for powdery soot from wood and cotton, solvent-based work for the oily film synthetics leave behind, and specific degreasing for the protein residue from cooking oil.

Only then does odor treatment make sense. Sealing a surface that still carries residue is the classic mistake, and it produces a room that smells clean through two dry weeks and then smells like a fire again as soon as the humidity comes up. In Earle it will come up.

  1. You callOne number per county. The dispatcher takes the address, the ZIP and a short description of what happened.
  2. A local crew calls backAn independent restoration contractor already working that county rings you directly and sets a time.
  3. They look, then scope itNothing is priced from a phone call. The crew walks the building, takes readings, and writes a scope you can hand to your adjuster.

Older layers hold more

Buildings in this town carry decades of alterations, and odor collects in what those alterations left behind. Ceilings added under original ones, flooring laid over earlier flooring, chases abandoned when plumbing or wiring moved, and cavities insulated in one era and untouched in another all give smoke somewhere to sit where a cleaning cloth will never reach it.

Unfinished wood is the other reservoir. Framing, plank subfloor and attic boards that were never sealed absorb residue readily and release it slowly. Where those surfaces can be reached, they are cleaned and then sealed, and that seal is doing real work rather than hiding anything. Where they cannot be reached, the honest answer is that the odor may take a second pass, and saying so beforehand is better than promising one visit.

Ground conditions here

  • A railroad reached Earle in 1888; its 1922 depot, abandoned in the 1960s, has been preserved and now houses the Crittenden County Museum.
  • A 1928 monument to George Berry Washington in Earle is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Earle sits in western Crittenden County on U.S. Highway 64 near the Cross County line, at 207 feet elevation across 3.25 square miles.

Ductwork, air and the smoke that comes from outside

Any system that ran during or after a fire has residue in the return, the coil and the supply runs, and cleaning the rooms while leaving the ducts alone is how an odor returns a month later. The system gets cleaned or replaced as part of the job, and filters are changed at the end rather than the beginning, since the last thing a fresh filter should do is catch what the cleaning stirred up.

Not every smoke smell in this town starts inside a building. Agricultural crop-residue burning continues here even under some county burn bans, including the one Crittenden County entered on September 11, 2025, and field smoke pulled in through a return or an open window can put a strong odor into a house with nothing wrong in it. That case is a filter, an airing on a dry day and a wipe-down of hard surfaces. Distinguishing it from a real smoke event saves people a claim they do not need to file.

Air scrubbing with filtration helps during active work by capturing what cleaning releases. It is a support tool, not a solution: it lowers the particle count in the room while the actual work of removing and cleaning the source goes on around it.

Before you call

Will an ozone or thermal fogging treatment fix the smell?

Only after cleaning, and only as a finishing step on residual odor in a building that has already had the source removed. Used as a substitute for cleaning it buys a few weeks. The buildings where it works are the ones that hardly needed it.

How many visits does odor work usually take?

Often one, sometimes two. A second pass is most likely where unfinished wood or an inaccessible cavity holds residue, and a crew that tells you a second visit may be needed is being straight with you rather than padding the job.

Can I clean smoke off the walls with household cleaner?

On a dry, powdery residue over washable paint, careful work with a dry sponge first and a mild cleaner after does help. Do not start with a wet cloth on an oily or protein residue. It spreads the film and pushes it into the finish, and then the wall has to be sealed instead of washed.

The clothes and bedding still smell after washing. Is that fixable?

Usually, through specialized textile cleaning rather than repeat home laundering, which tends to set the odor. Items are inventoried before they go out, and anything that does not come back clean is documented for the claim.
