Moving what survived a Jonesboro fire out of the building
Nine people lost the use of their rooms in one early-morning motel fire on Nettleton Avenue in July 2026, and the fire itself stayed inside a single unit and the attic above it. Nearly everything those residents owned was in the building, untouched by flame and covered in residue. That situation is what a pack-out exists to handle.
The number below is the one for this county. Others on the site route elsewhere.
This county is on the coverage list for fire damage only. A burst pipe or a flooded floor here has nowhere to route on this line, and it is better to read that now than after describing it to a dispatcher.
Cleaning in place, or moving it out
Belongings get cleaned where they sit when the building still has power, a roof and a room that can be closed off from the work. A pack-out becomes the answer when it does not: when City Water and Light has the service cut, when the roof is opened, when the rebuild will run for weeks, or when every surface in the house is about to be scrubbed, sealed and painted. Cleaning a sofa twice costs more than moving it once.
The decision is worth making deliberately rather than by default. Moving contents is not free, storage is not free, and a small loss confined to one room rarely justifies emptying a house. On a larger loss the reverse is true, and owners who insist on keeping everything in place usually end up paying for the same cleaning a second time after the demolition dust settles.
- You callOne number per county. The dispatcher takes the address, the ZIP and a short description of what happened.
- A local crew calls backAn independent restoration contractor already working that county rings you directly and sets a time.
- They look, then scope itNothing is priced from a phone call. The crew walks the building, takes readings, and writes a scope you can hand to your adjuster.

The ZIP is what the dispatcher checks first, so it is worth having ready.
The inventory is the claim
Contents are almost always a separate line from the building on a policy, and they are settled from a list. A pack-out produces that list: room by room, item by item, condition noted, photographed, boxed and labeled with where it came from. Items that cannot be saved get their own list and their own photographs before anything is disposed of, because an adjuster cannot pay for something nobody recorded.
In this city that split lands on a lot of households. Jonesboro is 54.3 percent owner-occupied, the county 60.1 percent, and median gross rent runs $958, so a large share of the buildings that burn hold somebody else's belongings. The structure is the owner's claim and the contents and displacement are the occupant's, which means two adjusters working one building, and for a renter the contents list is essentially the whole case.
What makes this place different
- The March 28, 2020 EF3 tornado (150 mph peak winds, 12.55-mile path, up to 600 yards wide) destroyed the Gateway Tire and Service Center on South Caraway Road, heavily damaged the Mall at Turtle Creek beyond repair, damaged 50 aircraft and destroyed steel hangars at Jonesboro Municipal Airport, derailed 112 railcars, and damaged homes along Wildwood Lane, Prospect Road, Nathan Drive, Tiffany Lane, Slimbridge Drive, Laura Lea Drive and the Eason/Dooley Streets neighborhoods, causing about $300 million in damage to roughly 300 buildings with 22 injuries and no deaths.
- The Jonesboro Fire Department holds an ISO Class 1 rating (since December 18, 2015, up from Class 3) and operates 7 stations plus a fire training academy on Fire Academy Drive, headquartered at 3215 East Johnson Avenue.
- Arkansas State University began as the First District Agricultural School in 1910 and was the first of Arkansas's sister district colleges granted university status; its Jonesboro campus anchors the city's northeast side.
What cleans and what does not
Hard, non-porous items do well: dishes, glass, sealed furniture, metal, tools, and most electronics if they are handled before residue has time to corrode contacts. Clothing and household textiles generally come back through specialized laundering rather than a home machine, which will move residue rather than remove it.
What does not come back is porous material that took residue deep. Mattresses and pillows, upholstery with soot driven into the foam, particleboard furniture that has swelled, and paper goods are usually written off. Food and medicine that were open to smoke get discarded; any question about what someone ate or took belongs to a doctor or a pharmacist, not to a cleaning crew.
Take these out yourself first
If the building is safe to enter, pull the small irreplaceable things before any truck arrives: passports, birth certificates, car titles, checkbooks, prescriptions, laptops, hard drives, jewelry, photographs. They are the items people panic about in week three, and no inventory system is as reassuring as having them in your own bag.
Do not sort belongings room by room while you are standing in soot, and do not start washing things to see what survives. Handling residue-covered items spreads it, and an item cleaned badly once is harder to restore than one left alone. Point the crew at what matters and let the inventory do the rest.
Storage while the building is worked on
Packed contents go into storage until the rebuild finishes, and the terms deserve to be written down at the start: who holds the goods, who pays for the storage and for how long, what the access arrangement is if you need something, and what happens if the rebuild runs past the estimate. Ask for your copy of the inventory before the truck pulls out of the driveway.
Keep one piece of sequencing straight. Boxes come home at the end of the reconstruction, not at the end of the cleaning, because a house full of returned furniture cannot be painted or floored. If you need particular items sooner, say which ones during the pack-out so they get boxed where they can be reached.
Questions and answers
Can I do the pack-out myself to save money?
You can move your own belongings, but the inventory and photographs are what the contents claim is settled from, so anything you take out yourself should still be listed and photographed before it leaves.
Who pays for storage while the house is rebuilt?
It is normally part of the contents portion of the claim, up to whatever the policy allows. Get the rate and the expected duration in writing at the start, since rebuild schedules move.
Will smoke-damaged electronics work again?
Often, if they are dealt with early. Residue from burned plastics is corrosive to contacts and boards, so equipment that sits in a closed-up building for weeks fares worse than the same item cleaned in the first days.
I rent. Does the landlord's insurance cover my furniture?
No. The owner's policy covers the building. Your belongings and the cost of being displaced fall under a renter's policy if you carry one, which is why the itemized contents list matters so much to tenants.
