Water and fire damage dispatch for northern Arkansas, from the White River to the Mississippi

When a Monette kitchen fire needs a contractor

Not every kitchen fire needs a contractor, and that is worth saying before anything else. If the flame stayed inside the pan and the smoke stayed in the room, soap, hot water and open windows on a dry day will usually finish the job in a Monette house without anybody being paid to help.

(870) 744-0364

Ring the county line and the job is passed to a contractor with equipment in the area.

The line carries fire damage in this county and no water coverage at all. Standalone mold work is outside it too.

The test that tells you which situation you are in

Clean the kitchen as well as you can, run the hood, and leave it two days. Then walk the rest of the house with the windows shut and pay attention in three places: the hallway, a closed closet, and the room farthest from the kitchen. If those smell clean and no surface anywhere is tacky, you are finished.

If any of them holds the smell, the smoke went past the kitchen, and cleaning what you can reach will not settle it. That is the honest dividing line, and it costs nothing to apply.

  1. You callOne number per county. The dispatcher takes the address, the ZIP and a short description of what happened.
  2. A local crew calls backAn independent restoration contractor already working that county rings you directly and sets a time.
  3. They look, then scope itNothing is priced from a phone call. The crew walks the building, takes readings, and writes a scope you can hand to your adjuster.

Where cooking smoke goes when it leaves the room

Grease smoke is oily and stays airborne. It exits a kitchen along the ceiling, and the two routes it takes are the hood duct and the return air. From the return it reaches every room the system serves, which is how a pan fire produces residue in a bedroom at the other end of the house.

The third route is upward. Warm smoke collects at the top of the room, finds the attic hatch or the gaps around ceiling penetrations, and cools against the roof deck and the insulation. Residue up there is invisible from below and is a common reason a kitchen that was cleaned properly still smells when summer arrives.

Ground conditions here

  • Manufacturing plants in Monette have included Electrolock Incorporated (from 1957) and Frolic Footwear (up to 175 workers); the town's 1936 water tower was built with PWA assistance.
  • Monette Fire Department, a municipal department, is headquartered at 303 Edmonds Street; the town is served by Buffalo Island Regional airport nearby on Highway 18 East.
  • Buffalo Island Central School District (formed 1984) serves over 800 students across four facilities in Monette.

What comes out and what stays

Cabinet boxes with sound finishes, painted wallboard, hard flooring, counters and glass generally clean, using a degreasing agent matched to the surface and then a rinse so nothing is left to yellow. Wiping oily residue with an ordinary household spray tends to spread it and push some of it into the finish, which is why crews test a small area first.

Filters go. Food in open or unsealed packaging goes. Carpet padding under the affected area usually goes. So do cabinet interiors where extinguishing water swelled the particleboard, which is a failure of the material rather than of the cleaning.

Scheduling from the far corner of the county

Monette is twenty-six miles from Jonesboro on AR-18 through Lake City and Black Oak, and ten miles from Lake City. A restoration crew coming here is planning a drive, which is one more reason to run the two-day test before making a call: if the answer is that you have already finished, nobody has to make the trip.

Craighead County is a fire-only county on this site, so kitchen and smoke work is inside what this line handles and water damage is not.

Before you call

How long can I wait before cleaning?

Not long, if the smoke went beyond the kitchen. Cooking residue hardens as it cools and cures onto surfaces, so a week of delay usually moves some items from cleanable to replaceable, particularly finished woodwork and painted surfaces.

Should I turn the heating and cooling off?

Yes, as soon as it is safe to. Running the system moves residue into rooms it has not reached yet and puts it inside the duct runs, which makes the eventual scope larger.

Does the attic really need checking after a pan fire?

It is worth a look if the fire produced enough smoke to fill the room. Warm smoke exits upward through the hatch and ceiling penetrations, and residue on insulation and the roof deck is a common source of odor that returns later.

Is a scorched cabinet door a replacement?

Usually the door rather than the whole run. Char on a face is not cleanable, but a sound box with a good finish behind it normally stays, so the repair is often narrower than people assume when they first look at it.
