Water and fire damage dispatch for northern Arkansas, from the White River to the Mississippi

Dispatch — Jonesboro and West Memphis

(870) 744-0364 Craighead, Crittenden

A town that has rebuilt its center twice

Three separate fires struck Monette in 1912 alone, two in January and a third in December. They took the wood-frame commercial buildings that made up the core of a town then twelve years old, and the town put them back. That is the first thing worth knowing about this place.

If you are standing in it, call first and photograph afterwards. The photographs keep.

Fire only, in this county. A supply line, a water heater or a sewer backup will not route from this page.

Incorporated on the tracks

The Jonesboro, Lake City and Eastern Railroad reached Buffalo Island in 1898, and residents of nearby Stottsville moved themselves to the rails. Monette incorporated on July 3, 1900. Its 2020 population was 1,506, and Buffalo Island Central School District, formed in 1984, serves more than 800 students across four facilities in town.

The other Buffalo Island towns in Craighead County are Caraway, thirteen miles south on AR-139, and Black Oak. Manila and Leachville, the remaining two, are in Mississippi County across the line.

December 10, 2021

The tornado that came out of the Mayfield-area outbreak on December 10, 2021 was a low-end EF4 with winds estimated at 170 mph. It tracked 81.17 miles through Arkansas, Missouri and Tennessee and stayed on the ground for 89 minutes. Moving through Monette's western and northern fringes it was at EF3 strength.

In town it destroyed two industrial buildings at the west edge, snapped many trees and power poles, and tore most of the roof off the Monette Manor nursing home while knocking down its masonry exterior walls. Twenty residents and staff were trapped and five were injured. One person was killed. The April 2, 2025 outbreak damaged homes and other structures here again.

What makes this place different

  • Three separate fires struck Monette in 1912 alone -- two in January and a third in December -- damaging its early wood-frame commercial buildings, which were subsequently rebuilt.
  • The December 10, 2021 EF4 tornado (part of the historic Mayfield-area outbreak) reached EF3 strength moving through Monette's western and northern fringes, destroyed two industrial buildings at the west edge of town, snapped many trees and power poles, tore most of the roof off the Monette Manor nursing home and knocked down its masonry exterior walls, trapping 20 residents and staff (5 injured) and killing one person.
  • A tornado outbreak on April 2, 2025 also damaged homes and other structures in Monette.
  • Manufacturing plants in Monette have included Electrolock Incorporated (from 1957) and Frolic Footwear (up to 175 workers); the town's 1936 water tower was built with PWA assistance.

Industry, water tower, airstrip

Manufacturing has been part of the town's economy for decades, including Electrolock Incorporated from 1957 and Frolic Footwear, which employed up to 175 workers. The 1936 water tower was built with Public Works Administration assistance. Buffalo Island Regional airport sits nearby on Highway 18 East.

Industrial and institutional buildings change what a fire loss looks like. Larger open volumes, masonry walls, equipment worth more than the structure around it, and interruption costs that dwarf the building repair. A restoration scope on that kind of property is written around getting an operation running again, not around what the walls will look like.

Where the roads run and who answers

Monette is twenty-six miles from Jonesboro by AR-18 west through Black Oak and Lake City, ten miles from Lake City itself, and thirteen from Caraway on AR-139. Monette Fire Department, one of the county's five municipal departments, is at 303 Edmonds Street, and it is the station that turns out to a 72447 address.

The distance is the practical fact. This is the far corner of Craighead County, and a crew coming from the county's western half has an hour of driving in each direction. Expect a scheduled visit whose first purpose is to stabilize and document.

Fire, and only fire, in this county

Craighead County on this site is a fire county and only a fire county. Nothing on the water side is bought here, so a failed pipe or a wet floor at a Monette address is not something any dispatcher on this line can route.

What is covered is the work after a fire: securing the structure, documenting before anything moves, deciding surface by surface what will clean, pulling residue out of cavities and mechanical runs, and rebuilding. Questions about how smoke exposure affects anyone in the household belong with a doctor and not with a contractor.

Questions and answers

What were the 1912 fires?

Three separate fires hit Monette in 1912, two in January and one in December. They damaged the young town's wood-frame commercial buildings, which were then rebuilt. It is an unusual concentration for one year in one small town.

How badly was Monette hit in December 2021?

The tornado was at EF3 strength through the town's western and northern fringes. Two industrial buildings at the west edge were destroyed, many trees and power poles were snapped, and the Monette Manor nursing home lost most of its roof and its masonry exterior walls, trapping twenty people and injuring five. One person was killed.

Is water damage covered here?

No. This county carries the fire vertical alone on this site. Saying so on the page is cheaper for everyone than saying it after a dispatcher has taken your address.

How far is a crew coming?

Twenty-six miles from Jonesboro on AR-18 through Lake City and Black Oak, or ten miles if the crew is already working in Lake City. Caraway is thirteen miles south on AR-139.
