Getting a Mulberry building dry and keeping it that way
Drying is the whole trade. Removing water is fast and satisfying and takes an afternoon; getting the moisture back out of wood, plaster and concrete takes days and decides whether the repair holds. On low ground near a river mouth, that second half is where the job is won or lost.
Dial the county number and you will be talking to a crew, not to us, within a short while.
Water only, in this county. A structure fire, a grease fire or smoke odor will not route from this page.
The three kinds of water that show up here
A supply line failure inside the house delivers clean water in quantity. Most of what it touched can stay if it is dried quickly, and the demolition is minimal. This is the version worth catching in the first hours, and knowing where the shutoff valve is matters more than anything a contractor brings.
River water is contaminated from the moment it leaves the channel. The Mulberry drains seventy miles of mountain ground and moves enough material that a single 2010 landslide off Mountain Creek near Highway 23 loaded it with mud and silt. Anything porous that absorbed it leaves the building. Framing, concrete and masonry stay and get cleaned.
Sewer water is handled as its own category with containment and removal rather than drying, and any question about how contact with it might affect someone belongs with a physician, not a restoration crew.
- You callOne number per county. The dispatcher takes the address, the ZIP and a short description of what happened.
- A local crew calls backAn independent restoration contractor already working that county rings you directly and sets a time.
- They look, then scope itNothing is priced from a phone call. The crew walks the building, takes readings, and writes a scope you can hand to your adjuster.

Why drying is slower on low ground
Mulberry sits at 400 feet, lower than Van Buren at 650 and Cedarville at 860, and it sits near the point where a tributary meets a navigable river. Soil under and around a building on that ground stays wet after the surface water is gone, and a crawl space over damp soil is a moisture source working against every machine in the house.
This is why a soil cover under a house matters as much as the equipment inside it. Sheet polyethylene laid over bare ground, lapped and weighted, stops evaporation from the dirt into the floor system. Without it, dehumidifiers upstairs are fighting the yard.
It is also why crews here take moisture readings on the underside of the subfloor and on the joists rather than only in finished rooms. In a low-elevation house the wettest wood is usually where nobody is standing.
What makes this place different
- Severe flooding in 1923 and 1927 devastated farmland around Mulberry, prompting many residents to migrate to California for work.
- The Mulberry River runs about 70 miles from the Ozark Mountains, with 19.4 miles federally designated Scenic and 36.6 miles Recreational under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, and is a popular whitewater paddling run with canoe rental outfitters along its banks.
- The City of Mulberry broke ground on a $12.2 million water treatment plant expansion, 68 percent grant-funded, to serve growing commercial and residential demand.
Order of operations
Source first: shut the water off, or wait out the river, depending on which one it is. Extraction second, with a pump for depth and an extractor for saturated flooring. Third, open what is holding moisture out of sight: baseboard off, wet insulation out, flooring lifted where the subfloor beneath it is wet, cabinet toe kicks opened.
Fourth, air movement across wet surfaces combined with dehumidification, sized for the space rather than guessed. Fifth, readings taken at the same points on each visit and compared against dry material in the same building, with equipment staying until the numbers agree. Material comes out only when it will not come back, which is a measurement rather than an opinion.
Where the water was river water, cleaning and disinfection sit between the third and fourth steps, and the silt is physically removed rather than sealed under new flooring.
- Shut off the source or wait for the river to fall
- Pump the depth, extract the saturated material
- Open baseboards, insulation, flooring and toe kicks
- Clean and disinfect first if the water came from outside
- Air movement plus dehumidification sized to the space
- Meter readings until they match dry material in the same house
New mains, old services
The City of Mulberry operates its own water and sewer utility and has broken ground on a $12.2 million treatment plant expansion, 68 percent grant-funded, to serve new commercial and residential growth. Work of that scale means new pipe going in and pressure changing on lines that have been sitting undisturbed for decades.
That is worth knowing when a wet floor appears without any weather to explain it. A private service line with a weak joint can start weeping after a pressure change, and the symptom is a soft spot in the yard, a jump in the water bill, or damp along one wall. Tracing that back to the meter takes an hour and saves a much bigger repair.
Questions and answers
How do I know when a house is actually dry?
By comparison, not by touch. Readings are taken on the same materials in the affected area and on the same materials in a part of the house that stayed dry, and the job is finished when the two agree. A floor that feels dry on the surface can still be well above normal underneath.
Should I put new flooring down right away?
Not until the subfloor reads dry. New flooring installed over damp wood traps the moisture, and the problem reappears within a season as cupping, adhesive failure or an odor with no visible cause. Waiting a week is cheaper than doing it twice.
Does the crawl space have to be dried if the water never got upstairs?
Yes, when it got under the house. Damp soil and wet insulation below a floor keep the framing above them wet and the rooms above that humid. It is the single most commonly skipped part of a low-ground job here.
Can this line handle a fire loss in Mulberry?
It cannot. Crawford County is contracted for water damage only, so fire and smoke calls in Mulberry are outside it entirely. Anyone in that situation should look for a contractor selling fire work in the Fort Smith and Van Buren area.
