Fire in a building measured in acres, not rooms
Freight built this city's floor area. Distribution centers, truck terminals and racked warehouse space account for a large share of the square footage here, and a fire inside one of them is a different job from a fire in a house: bigger volumes, longer burn times, and a residue that settles across structure and inventory at once.
There is no form to fill in. The number routes by county and the crew calls you back directly.
What a plastics fire does to a warehouse
The clearest local example is the Altium Packaging plant on North 7th Street. Fire broke out there around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 30, 2023. The stored plastic materials inside the four-acre warehouse produced intense black smoke, the roof collapsed, and crews were still working hotspots in the debris three days later on October 2. No injuries were reported.
That fire shows three things that make a commercial loss its own category. Stored product becomes the fuel load, so the fire lasts far longer than the building alone would sustain. Synthetic materials leave an oily black residue that bonds to steel deck, joists and racking as it cools and does not brush off. And a collapsed roof turns an interior cleanup into a debris and structure job that has to be sequenced before anyone talks about finishes.
- You callOne number per county. The dispatcher takes the address, the ZIP and a short description of what happened.
- A local crew calls backAn independent restoration contractor already working that county rings you directly and sets a time.
- They look, then scope itNothing is priced from a phone call. The crew walks the building, takes readings, and writes a scope you can hand to your adjuster.

The buildings this city actually has
West Memphis has been a freight hub since I-55 opened in the 1950s, and the employers reflect it: Schneider National Carriers, FedEx National LTL and Family Dollar Distribution among them, with Southland Park Gaming and Racing operating near the I-40 and I-55 interchange since 1956. The fire department covering all of it runs four stations and 66 members across 29 square miles containing two interstates and three railroads.
Structurally these are open-plan buildings: long steel spans, metal deck, insulated roof assemblies, and interior partitions that stop well below the deck. Smoke does not respect the partitions. It fills the whole volume, banks under the deck and settles as the space cools, which is why a fire in a packing area shows up as residue on product at the far end of the building. Sprinkler discharge spreads across the same floor with nothing to stop it and pools on a slab poured almost dead flat.
Ground conditions here
- A house fire at 903 Briarcliff Road just before 5 a.m. on March 4, 2024 killed two people despite fire crews arriving within six minutes.
- In 2024 the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded West Memphis a $16 million PROTECT grant to restore hundreds of acres of Mississippi riverfront wetlands as natural flood buffering for I-40 and I-55.
- West Memphis sits on the Mississippi River's west bank at the interchange of I-40 and I-55, at an elevation of about 213-215 feet and only roughly 11 feet above river level, far more exposed to river flooding than Memphis on the higher opposite bank.
Getting a business operating again
The first assessment is usually structural rather than cosmetic. Steel that took sustained heat is checked for deflection, roof deck and joists are evaluated, and any collapse zone is isolated before crews work under it. Then comes debris removal and the separation of inventory into cleanable, salvageable-for-claim and total loss, which is documentation work as much as physical work because the numbers end up in an insurance file.
Cleaning follows from the deck down: structure, then racking, then floor, so residue is not knocked onto surfaces already cleaned. Ductwork and any process air handling get attention early, since running the system afterward redistributes what has just been removed. Where only part of a building is affected, hard containment and negative air let the unaffected side keep working, and partial reopening is often the difference between a hard month and a lost quarter.
Before you call
Can product stored near the fire be sold after cleaning?
That is a decision for the owner and the insurer, and for any regulator that governs the product, not for a restoration crew. What the crew can do is separate what is physically cleanable from what is not, document both, and clean what is kept.
Why is oily soot so much harder than the soot from a wood fire?
Because it condenses onto surfaces as it cools rather than resting on them. Residue from burning plastics bonds to painted steel, deck and racking, smears when it is wiped dry, and generally needs a solvent-based method and more passes than the powdery residue from wood or paper.
The fire was out days ago but the building still smells. Why?
Deep-seated residue in insulation, in duct interiors, in porous block and in stored packaging keeps releasing odor. Debris that burned for days, as in the 2023 North 7th Street fire, holds more of it. The answer is source removal and surface cleaning, not deodorizing over the top of it.
Can part of the building keep running during cleanup?
Often yes, with sealed containment, separate air handling and a clear route for equipment and debris that does not cross the working side. It has to be planned at the start, because retrofitting containment around an operating dock is much harder than building it before work begins.
